What Does an Animal Communicator Actually Do?
Updated: Aug 10

I’m in my pajamas with my cat, sitting on my bed at 6:30am.
My tea is beside me on my tiny bookshelf; I’ve only had half but I’m ready to begin. I have a short window of alone time before my daughter wakes up.
After putting my earplugs in I cleanse my apophyllite. I hold it to my heart with my left hand, where it will stay for the remainder of the reading. Crystals have highly ordered, stable molecular structures and low entropy, which allow them to store and transmit precise frequencies. There’s quartz in your smartphone. I ask my sparkly gem to help me connect with today’s animal in a clear and concise way. Sometimes I take a pretty oval piece of labradorite and fix it to my forehead over my third eye. My pineal gland needs the love!
If all this sounds very woo – it is. Does it work for me? Yes.
I’ve experienced the non-physical realms through meditation and breathwork, and let me tell you – if you can get there you will never want to leave. The physical world pales in comparison to the spiritual plane, the other side, heaven or other dimensions – whatever you’d like to call it.
I take some deep breaths, clearing the energy that isn’t mine. I breathe out black until it changes to clear, cut the energetic cords from yesterday. Sink. Clear the mind. Run earth energy up through my root chakra and invite universal energy down through my crown chakra.

Now I’m staring at the eyes of a dog; her picture is zoomed in on my phone. I wait for any impressions that might come. Sometimes there’s something and sometimes there isn’t. I memorize her sweet face and close my eyes.
I’m in total darkness and my body doesn’t exist anymore. I’m floating upward in a thick, clear liquid, inside an elongated bubble, up toward the light. A kind of non-physical glitter is falling on my face and shoulders as I ascend upward. I feel it on my skin like warm rain. I see the dog I’m connecting with above me at a higher vibration. I keep lifting and breathing deeply, totally at peace. When I reach her my bubble gently opens and I’m with her in her world.
She’s moving now, no longer a static picture. She’s rolling over onto her back for a belly rug. Then she’s running in a beautiful grassy field, down to a river.
I press RECORD on my audio app and then the session begins.
“Hello.”
She barks once.
“How are you this morning, Matilda?”
I would guess that each animal communicator has a certain method that works for them, in order to reach the space of connection. But the goal is the same – to communicate with animals to better understand their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors; to provide insight into what an animal may be experiencing and help strengthen the connection between animals and the people who care for them.
Now let’s define communication. Again, I think each person has a different approach, different strengths, but we all rely on the clairs: clairvoyance (clear seeing) is when I see a static picture in my mind’s eye, or it may be more like a movie; clairsentience (clear feeling) is sensing information through physical or emotional sensations, like a sudden pain in the hand; claircognizance (clear knowing) is getting sudden, direct knowledge or insight about a situation without logical explanation or sensory input; and clairaudience (clear hearing) is when I hear things in my head, or the animal speaking.
There are a few other clairs, but clairaudience is probably the most problematic because differentiating between your own thoughts and what’s coming in from the animal is difficult at first. And everyone knows that animals don’t speak like we do. My belief is that I’m translating the animal’s energy output into language almost instantaneously (sometimes there’s a lag), or I have the help of a ‘translator guide’. Or both.
Personally, I also rely heavily on clairvoyance which is usually easier to interpret. Static and moving images appear and then I ask questions to make sure I’m interpreting them right. I just describe what I’m seeing for the audio recording, which I later turn into a transcription for my client.
But sometimes I’m wrong. And that’s because I have the tools that I have, rather like an artist has certain brushes and paints to paint a landscape. Another artist will have different brushes and paints. We’ll both interpret the landscape maybe in very different ways. I may not even own the right cobalt blue necessary for the darkening sky. But I might acquire it.
I’ll get the information that I’m supposed to get in that moment. Sometimes the animal’s person isn’t ready for other information. Ultimately if a deeper understanding, empathy and new perspectives are created through a reading this will often lead to positive change, be it in the animal’s personality, daily habits, preferences, or reactions to certain situations.
Animal communication facilitates stronger relationships, regardless of whether the pet is alive or passed. And I would personally like to bring greater awareness to the vast amount of knowledge our animals possess. Yes, that furry little love that bursts your heart wide open when you think about them - is a wise and infinite being with a soul just waiting to be asked a question.
